Curriculum Building

The term "curriculum" is a word that is often misunderstood.  Literally meaning "to run the course," curriculum is not Sunday School literature. Rather, a church's curriculum is every experience that it offers its members and community toward the individual and corporate goals of becoming like Christ and participation in the mission of God.

Every church should regularly consider both its implied (null) and explicit curriculum. What kind of disciple are we producing?  How are we preparing God's people for works of service? By virtue of its absence, what are we saying is not important? What is our core curriculum?

The design of a core curriculum for your church is an important first step toward your vision of forming disciples and participating in God's mission. When designing a core curriculum, consider its core components. This Destinations Web resource is designed with a suggested core curriculum in mind; the core components are the designations on the Destinations homepage. Consider using these core components to build your church's core curriculum. Feel free to add additional components as you feel led, keeping in mind the essential information AND formation necessary to becoming a well-rounded disciple of Christ.

Churches that have full-time Christian educators can help facilitate this conversation.Unfortunately, many smaller churches do not have access to this resource. If you require assistance beyond the use of Destinations, please contact Rick Bennett, Director of Congregational Life at the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship by email at rbennett@thefellowship.info or (770) 220-1605. He will be glad to put you in touch with a Congregational Life Specialist who can meet your needs.
